For day three of their literary diet, the Guardian suggests listening to Kate Bush sing her song, ‘The Sensual World’ which is, they say, based on Molly Bloom’s soliloquy from Ulysses. As always, they provide a link to the You Tube video, which I duly clicked, but I managed only about thirty seconds. Kate Bush is too screechy and dramatic for me. I’m sure she’s a lovely person, and I know lots of people who are quite passionate about her work. I respect that, but I’m just not one of them. So, instead I turned to The Poetry Archive, always a sanctuary, and found a recording of Helen Mirren reading Emily Dickinson’s ‘Wild Nights.’
The text of the poem is also on this page, and I exhort you to read it yourself before listening to Ms Mirren, just to fully experience the genius of her interpretation.
